PREVENT – Agriculture

Mediterranean agriculture is facing unprecedented threats due to climate change, with up to a third of traditional rain-fed farmland at risk by 2040. But adaptation is already underway. In our new video, we explore how the PREVENT project is bridging the gap between cutting-edge science and on-the-ground action. See how our cross-border consortium is equipping farmers, policymakers, and investors with actionable seasonal forecasts and predictive tools to build climate resilience before disaster strikes.

PREVENT – Wildfires

Each summer, vast swaths of the Mediterranean are increasingly under threat from wildfires. Driven by prolonged heat waves and droughts, over 70% of all wildfires in Europe now ignite in this region, bringing devastating consequences to our ecosystems, health, and economies. But what if we could anticipate these disasters before they strike?

In our latest video, we explore how the PREVENT project is shifting the paradigm from reaction to preparedness. By combining advanced climate science with real-time environmental data, our teams are developing early warning systems and seasonal forecasts to predict fire-prone periods.

Watch to learn how we are working to protect the Mediterranean's people, forests, and future through science, solidarity, and smart solutions.

PREVENT – Human Health Insurance

In the Mediterranean, climate change is no longer just an environmental issue. It is a public health emergency.

Rising temperatures and intensifying heat waves are putting immense pressure on both our healthcare and insurance systems. With heat-related illnesses surging and new diseases spreading, the need for proactive, data-driven solutions has never been more urgent.

In our newest video, we highlight how the PREVENT project is integrating climate science directly into health protection. Discover how our teams, including researchers at the Cyprus Institute, are developing early warning systems, health risk mapping, and adaptive insurance models. By predicting extreme temperatures earlier and more accurately, we are empowering health services to prepare and protect vulnerable communities before the worst impacts occur.

PREVENT – Tourism

Tourism is the lifeblood of the Mediterranean, but the very sun that draws millions of visitors is becoming a growing threat. Rising temperatures, water shortages, and coastal erosion are fundamentally reshaping travel as we know it. By 2050, many beloved destinations could face up to 60 more heat-stressed days each year. How do we protect both the industry and the environment?

In our latest video, we explore how the PREVENT project is helping the sector adapt. By improving near-term predictions of the holiday climate index and providing seasonal climate forecasts, we are enabling destinations to anticipate risks like heat waves and droughts before they hit.

From engaging stakeholders in Cyprus to promoting sustainable, resilient tourism management, watch how foresight and collaboration can ensure the Mediterranean remains the world's favorite destination.

PREVENT – Water Resources

Water scarcity in the Mediterranean is intensifying, but it is not inevitable. As a climate change hotspot, our region is facing dwindling rainfall, dropping groundwater levels, and elevated drought risks. With stream flows declining by up to 40% in some catchments since the 1980s, securing our most precious resource requires urgent, data-driven action.

In our latest video, we dive into how the PREVENT project is tackling these challenges through North-South cooperation. By integrating seasonal and decadal climate forecasts with advanced hydrological models, in collaboration with partners like the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and experts in Morocco, we are equipping decision-makers with the tools they need. This vital data helps resource managers anticipate droughts, adjust irrigation schedules, and implement nature-based solutions like managed aquifer recharge long before dry periods hit.
