Specific Objectives.

PREVENT project addresses the great challenge of improving short-to – medium-term adaptation decisions by strengthening the predictability of impact-relevant climate extremes in the Mediterranean region.

PREVENT will:

  • Provide a documentation freely accessible to all Mediterranean countries that follow the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), on the PREVENT’s website by identifying and analyzing barriers and opportunities in using seasonal and decadal data for identification of climate extreme hot spot regions in the Mediterranean, with case studies of good practices, embracing the issue of integration with a more open mindset.
  • Identify impact-relevant weather patterns conducive to Mediterranean extremes and their dominant local and remote causal drivers.
  • Evaluate causal drivers and pathways to tackle uncertainties in operational forecasts and high-resolution climate models to measure the magnitude of changes.
  • Develop innovative data-driven statistical and machine learning-based approaches to optimize seasonal and decadal forecasts in climate extreme hot spot regions.
  • Provide fit-to-purpose data and extreme indices following the FAIR47 standards.
  • Develop a user-friendly PREVENT eTool for seasonal and decadal extremes in the Mediterranean. Workflow management tools may be used in many domains, to guide and direct processes, support monitoring activities, and increase organizational efficiency.
  • Couple Impact models for several key sectors, such as forestry, agriculture, water management, human health, and tourism, with Innovative methods that benefit from the improved seasonal and decadal climate data.
  • Develop the PREVENT “adaptation decision tool” as an advisory network providing rapid, high- quality, short-term technical assistance for Mediterranean countries. The goal is to provide on-demand support via advice and strategic guidance on environmental integration at policy, program, and project levels.
  • Develop an online roadmap, with instructions for easy accessibility to the PREVENT output, easily translated and adaptable to national case studies, enabling end-users across the Mediterranean to better understand and practice the integration of impacts of the extremes.
  • Present lessons learnt on adaptation in the agricultural sector that are highly relevant for key policies of the European Union such as Farm-to-Fork as well as for the implementation of the eco-schemes of the Common Agricultural Policy.
